A basque is an item of women's apparel that acts as a bustier (corset) and a garter belt all in one. Just like a bustier and a bra, the basque supports the chest and has adjustable straps. Just as with a garter belt, it has garter straps to hold thigh highs in place.
The term, of French origin, refers to a type of bodice or jacket with stays, worn by women during the 18th and beginning of 19th century to mould and shape the torso into a desired shape. Its close contoured fit give a slimming and holding effect.
